November, A Fantasy Journey: Step Through Hong Kong’s Magic Portal
Hong Kong’s magic lies in the unexpected: wild landscapes that suddenly appear just beyond the city, and forgotten codes of the past hidden beneath its busy streets. A pineapple bun without pineapple? Pure Hong Kong magic.
Cheung Po Tsai Cave and Cheung Po Tsai Trail? Let’s just say that the legendary pirate may not have left as many footprints as their names suggest.
Three routes, three kinds of wonder. This November, take a step beyond the familiar and discover another side of Hong Kong.
(Local residents and overseas visitors are all welcome. English and Mandarin interpretation can be arranged.)
15/11 (10:00 ~ 14:00) — Sham Chung Exploration
The coastal landscape around Three Fathoms Cove was once a picture-perfect retreat, where the relative difficulty of getting there helped preserve a rare sense of peace. It was a place to slow down, stay awhile and simply take in the scenery.
But development has gradually transformed part of its landscape: Sham Chung. An abandoned golf course plan has given way to a vast grassland, yet its future remains uncertain. Could this open landscape one day become the private backyard of a residential development? As roads become more accessible and visitor numbers grow, convenience comes at a cost: the quiet charm that once defined the area is becoming harder to find.
This is more than just a countryside walk.
Join Samuel, who was involved in monitoring development activities in protected areas and witnessed the gradual transformation of Sham Chung, as we revisit this changing landscape. Before it becomes unrecognisable, come and see for yourself how the area has evolved amid the ongoing tension between development and conservation.
We’ll begin with the picturesque scenery of Three Fathoms Cove, continue on foot to Sham Chung’s expansive grassland and historical remains, and round off the journey with a Hakka lunch.
Some places are worth visiting while we can still recognise them.
21/11 (14:30 ~ 17:30) — Explore Pre-war architecture at Tsuen Wan
It’s time to go house hunting again—but not quite in the usual way!
Join Sonie, an architect specialising in heritage restoration, for another urban exploration, this time in Tsuen Wan.
Beyond its distinctive pre-war tenement buildings, the neighbourhood holds many architectural clues to its past. As we walk from one building to another, we’ll uncover the stories behind Tsuen Wan’s transformation from a rural settlement into a modern urban district.
The city’s history is not confined to monuments and museums. Sometimes, it is written into the very buildings we pass every day without a second glance.
28/11 (14:00 ~ 17:00) — All About South China Pirate
From the eighteenth to the twentieth century, the waters of southern China were a stage for notorious pirates and maritime adventures.
Hong Kong’s pirate legacy goes beyond legendary names. Along its shores, traces of the past remain in defensive installations built to guard against pirates, as well as in the stories of coastal communities and their enduring beliefs.
Let’s trace Hong Kong’s maritime past, explore historic anti-piracy defences, and visit the only Tin Hau Temple in Hong Kong built entirely of granite. Small in scale but rich in history, the temple holds a touching story of its own.
And of course, we’ll continue the search for the real footprints of Cheung Po Tsai…
Just don’t expect us to take you to Cheung Po Tsai Cave!
A private tour bus will take us between the various sites, allowing us to explore more of Hong Kong and uncover more stories along the way.
